Welcome to the Classroom Seating Chart Generator. This tool allows educators to easily design traditional row-and-column or group/table classroom layouts, track student assignments, validate seating capacities, export printable PDFs, and generate student desk tags.
1. Classroom & Layout Setup
Classroom / Class Name: Type your class name (e.g., Period 1 Homeroom or Science 101) in the top input box. This updates the title on your seating chart and every exported name tag.
Layout Style: Choose between Traditional Rows & Columns or Grouped Desks / Tables.
Teacher / Board Position: Select whether the Teacher / Board (Front of Classroom) is located at the top or bottom of the page. The seating layout and rows automatically align to face the front board position.
Layout Dimensions:
For Rows Mode: Specify the Number of Rows and Chairs / Desks per Row.
For Groups Mode: Specify the Number of Desk Groups and Desks per Group.
Desk Box Size Scale: Adjust the sizing scale of your desk squares (Very Compact 60%, Compact 75%, Standard 100%, or Large 125%).
Show Student Names: Leave Show Student Names on Seating Chart checked (default) to display student names inside their desk boxes. Unchecking this option hides names for anonymous seating layout planning.
2. Capacity Warnings & Roster Management
Over-Capacity Alerts: If you assign more students to a row or group than the configured desk limit, the input field will automatically turn red, and a warning banner will appear at the top with suggestions to add more desks or rows.
Single Add: Select the Assigned Unit (Row or Group) and enter the Student Name, then click Add Student.
Mass Add Roster (Bulk Paste): Click 📥 Mass Add Roster to open the bulk paste panel. Paste student names one per line, select your target unit, and click Add Batch to instantly populate your roster.
Grouped Sections & Drag-and-Drop Reordering: Your roster is organized into separate section boxes for each unit. Click and drag the handle (☰) next to any student to reorder them or move them across units.
Full Group Drag-and-Drop: In Grouped Desks mode, you can click and drag entire group cards directly by their header handle (☰) to rearrange the physical arrangement of tables in your classroom.
3. Live Seating Layout & Interactive Drag-and-Drop
The layout updates instantly as you adjust dimensions or reorder students.
Interactive Drag-and-Drop: You can click and drag any student desk directly on the live seating layout to swap or move students between desks and rows on the fly.
Desk Numbers: Each desk box automatically displays its designated desk number (#1, #2, etc.) in the top-left badge.
4. Exporting PDFs & Saving Work
Chart PDF: Click 📄 Chart PDF to download a clean, landscape-oriented PDF layout of your entire classroom seating chart.
Name Tags PDF: Click 🏷️ Name Tags PDF to generate a portrait-oriented PDF containing printable desk/name tags for each assigned student.
How to Save and Edit Your Work: Because this tool runs entirely within your web browser for complete privacy, the only way to save your charts to edit them in the future is to click the 💾 Save Chart button. This downloads a small configuration file (.json) directly to your computer. To edit your chart later, simply click 📂 Open Chart and upload that file back into the app.
Complete Privacy: No student data, rosters, or classroom layouts are saved by the developer personally. There are no user accounts, and no data is sent to or stored on external servers.
Data Recovery: Because everything is stored locally on your device, there is no way to access or recover charts if browser data is cleared or if you forget to download your saved file. Always make sure to download your .json file before closing your session!
