General Music Seating Chart Generator

Welcome to the General Music Seating Chart Generator. This tool is designed for music educators to quickly configure, customize, and export interactive classroom seating charts for single or dual carpets.

1. Setup & Layout Configuration

Configure your classroom parameters under 1. Setup & Layout Options:

• Class Name: Enter your class title (e.g., 3rd Grade Elementary Music or 1st Period Concert Choir), which updates dynamically on the chart header and PDF exports.

• Teacher & Row 1 Position: Choose whether the teacher/board/front of the room is at the Bottom or Top of the layout.

• Carpet Shape: Switch between Rectangle Seating and Circular Seating.

• Dimensions & Center Seats:

  • For rectangles, specify horizontal perimeter spots, vertical side spots, and any desired Middle Seats to fill the center grid with uniform squares.

  • For circles, specify the total number of squares around the circle.

• Number of Carpets: Choose 1 Carpet or 2 Carpets. If 2 carpets are selected, choose their layout alignment (Right, Left, Below, or Above) and configure independent rosters or middle seats.

• Square Size Scale: Adjust the dropdown to scale the size of the entire seating squares (Tiny, Small, Normal, Large, Extra Large) to fit your visual or printing preferences.

2. Managing Student Rosters

Add and organize students under 2. Add Students & Direct Roster Editing:

• Single Add: Type a student's name into the input box and click Add (or press Enter).

• Mass Add: Click 📋 Mass Add to open a text box where you can paste an entire class list (one name per line) and import them instantly.

• Direct Roster Editing:

  • Drag to Reorder: Click and drag the handle icon ($\vdots\vdots$) on any roster item to reorder students.

  • Color Coding: Select a custom color for each student's carpet square using the dropdown menu (White, Blue, Teal, Green, Yellow, Red, Orange, Purple, Gray).

  • Carpet Assignment: If using two carpets, easily reassign students between Carpet 1 and Carpet 2 using the inline dropdown.

  • Removal: Click the red Remove button to unassign a student.

3. Interactive Seating Canvas

The live seating chart displays your configured carpets at the bottom of the screen:

• Drag-and-Drop Swapping: Click and drag any seated student directly on the carpet canvas to swap them with another spot.

• Smart Color Matching: When you swap or move students on the canvas, their carpet square colors stay attached to their physical spots (e.g., moving a student from a blue spot to a green spot swaps both their positions and their square colors).

• Visual Guides: Empty spots display their spot numbers clearly, while occupied spots display the student's name with high-contrast text readability.

4. Saving, Loading, and Exporting

Use the top header or export buttons to manage your files:

• 💾 Save Chart: Export your entire setup, roster, and seating arrangement as a .json file to your computer for future editing.

• 📂 Open Chart: Upload a previously saved .json seating chart file to restore your class setup instantly.

• 📄 Chart PDF: Generate and download a clean, high-resolution landscape PDF of your seating chart optimized for printing or digital sharing.

• 🌙 Dark Mode: Toggle between light and dark themes using the button in the top right corner.

5. Important: Saving and Privacy Notice

• Local Processing: All data (student names, roster lists, color configurations, and seating layouts) is processed entirely within your web browser on your local device.

• No Cloud Storage or Tracking: Student names and personal data are never uploaded, transmitted, stored on external servers, or shared with third parties.

• Data Security: Because student data stays entirely on your local device, this tool complies with standard educational privacy guidelines (such as FERPA/COPPA principles regarding student PII). To save your work permanently between sessions or across different computers, always use the 💾 Save Chart button to download a local .json backup file.
